When to Renew Your 5-Year License
You can renew your 5-year Thai driving license up to 6 months (180 days) before it expires, and the easy renewal path extends up to 1 year after the expiration date. The ideal time to renew is 1-3 months before expiry, which gives you enough time to gather documents without any risk of driving with an expired license. If you renew before expiry, your new license period starts from the old expiry date, so you do not lose any time. If your license has been expired for more than 1 year but less than 3 years, you will need to retake the written test in addition to the aptitude tests. If it has been expired for more than 3 years, you must go through the entire process again as a new applicant, including the practical driving test. Do not let your license lapse beyond the 1-year grace period if you can avoid it.
5-Year Renewal vs 2-Year Temporary Renewal
It is important to understand the difference between renewing a 5-year permanent license and upgrading from a 2-year temporary license. If you currently hold a 2-year temporary license, your next step is an upgrade (or extension) to the 5-year permanent license — this is technically not a renewal but a license class change. If you already hold a 5-year permanent license and it is approaching expiry, you are doing a straightforward renewal and will receive another 5-year license. The process is similar for both, but the costs differ: upgrading from temporary to permanent costs 505 THB for car or 255 THB for motorcycle, which is the same as a 5-year renewal. Both processes require only aptitude tests — no written or practical driving tests — as long as you apply within the valid renewal window.
Documents Required for 5-Year Renewal
For a 5-year license renewal, you need to bring: your current Thai driving license (even if expired, as long as it is within the renewal window), your original passport with a valid non-immigrant visa, a residence certificate from Thai Immigration dated within 30 days, and a medical certificate from a licensed Thai clinic dated within 30 days. The medical certificate costs 50-300 THB depending on the clinic, and the residence certificate costs 200-500 THB from immigration. Some DLT offices may also ask for a copy of your TDAC arrival confirmation (the digital card that replaced the paper TM6 in May 2025) or TM30 receipt, though this varies by location. If your name or passport number has changed since your last license was issued, bring documentation showing the change. It is a good practice to bring photocopies of all documents as well, though most DLT offices have a copy service available for a small fee.
The Renewal Process at DLT
The renewal process for a 5-year license is significantly simpler than the initial application. You do not need to take the written test or the practical driving test — only the four aptitude tests are required. These tests are: color blindness (identifying red, yellow, and green), depth perception (aligning two rods at the same depth), peripheral vision (detecting lights at the edge of your vision while looking straight ahead), and brake reaction time (pressing a brake pedal when a light changes). These tests are straightforward and take only about 10-15 minutes total. After passing the aptitude tests, you will have your photo taken and your new license will be printed on the spot. The entire renewal process typically takes 1-2 hours, compared to the full day required for new applications. No video session or classroom instruction is required for renewals.
Cost of 5-Year License Renewal
The official DLT fee for renewing a 5-year car driving license is 505 THB, and for a motorcycle license it is 255 THB. If you hold both car and motorcycle licenses, you can renew them simultaneously for a combined fee of 760 THB. These fees are paid at the DLT office on the day of renewal — cash is preferred, though some offices now accept card payments or PromptPay. In addition to the DLT fee, factor in the cost of the medical certificate (50-300 THB) and the residence certificate from immigration (200-500 THB). If you use a service agent or driving school to assist with the renewal, expect to pay an additional 2,000-5,000 THB for their services. The total out-of-pocket cost for a self-handled renewal is typically around 800-1,300 THB including all supporting documents.
Online Renewal Option
Thailand's DLT has announced a fully online renewal — training through DLT e-Learning, application and payment online, the new card delivered by post or service kiosk — but it has not actually opened: the launch was postponed in February 2026 and the revised June 2026 target passed without an opening announcement. When it arrives it will run on ThaID identity verification (Thai national ID required), and the DLT has said nothing about foreigner access. Foreign passport holders renew in person — though the visit is shorter than it used to be, since the June 2026 rule changes cut most renewals down to two quick aptitude checks. What foreigners CAN do online is complete the e-learning course in advance (dlt-elearning.com) and book a priority queue slot at gecc.dlt.go.th, which together typically save 1 to 2 hours at the office. We re-check monthly and will update this page when the DLT opens online renewal to foreign passport holders.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
The most common mistake is letting your license expire beyond the 1-year grace period, which forces you to retake the written test or even start the entire process from scratch. Another frequent error is bringing an expired medical certificate or residence certificate — both must be dated within 30 days of your DLT visit. Some applicants forget to bring their old license, which the DLT needs to process the renewal. Others arrive at the DLT office too late in the day; for renewals, arriving by mid-morning is usually fine, but do not show up after 2:00 PM as processing may not be completed before closing. Finally, make sure your passport has a valid visa stamp — if your visa has expired or you are on a visa exemption stamp, the DLT will not process your renewal. Plan your renewal around your visa status to avoid unnecessary complications.
